Richard Robinson

Richard Robinson quietly departed this life on the morning of Sunday, April 13, 2024. He was born on April 18, 1951 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Mary Jean and Clayton Robinson. Reared in Washington D.C., he created a lifetime of great memories and joy with his parents’ love and that of his siblings, Judy Robinson-Lomax and Adjoa Dionne Robinson. He was educated in the DC Public school system, graduating from Ballou High School. In 1973, Richard graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), Hampton VA. During this time, he also became a jazz enthusiast collecting hundreds of albums over a lifetime.

Richard enjoyed his career at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Washington, DC, as a manager for student accounts. There, he was a vital force ensuring timely student registration and compliance with university financial regulations, as well as other fiscal tasks. While at the university in the mid-1970’s, Richard met and fell in love with a fellow colleague, Sheila Clark (nee McClintock), and began a lifetime of committed love. They both retired from university service in the early 2000s. The couple enjoyed bi-annual Caribbean jazz cruises and travel throughout the U.S., especially Florida. Sheila and Richard were inseparable. They sealed their partnership of over 45 years marrying on a snowy Valentine’s Day in, 2010. They were blessed with a son in 1979, Clayton Julius Robinson who later married Angela Johnson. This union expanded the Robinson clan with the births of two grandsons Kevin and Corey. Richard and Sheila were doting grandparents and assisted in raising their grandchildren; spoiling them with whatever they could, especially time, love and a second home.

Richard joined Greater St. Paul Baptist Church in 2009. He was an active member serving as a deacon, vice president of the Helping Hands ministry, and member of the E. F. Timbers Male Chorus. Church members particularly enjoyed when Richard and Sheila cooked for church functions as members of the Hospitality Ministry. Richard regularly attended weekly Bible study and was recognized for dedicated and excellent service to the Gospel Chorus on the occasion of the church’s 40th anniversary and was commended for his labor and sacrifice toward the church’s remodeling project.

Richard leaves to cherish his memory, a son, Clayton J. Robinson, grandsons Kevin and Corey Robinson, sisters Bonita “Judy” and Adjoa, a nephew Earl Lomax, a best friend, Jacquelin May and a host of other relatives and friends. His wife and parents preceded him in death.

Arlene Christine Carter was born on January 7, 1982. She was born to Martin Carter and the late Michelle Carter at Prince Georges County Hospital in Cheverly Maryland. She grew up as the oldest of 4 siblings, and earned her high school diploma from Suitland High School in District Heights Md. She later obtained her certificate in Maryland Childcare certification from Prince Georges Community College.

Arlene was very passionate about family, children and people overall. As the oldest of 4 children, she passionately assisted in helping to raise her younger siblings, especially the youngest, her only brother, Martin Jr. Her passion for children also led her to attain jobs at several daycares throughout the county. And, her friends honored her ability to be the peace keeper and middle ground for the circle. Arlene loved to dance, laugh, sing and was often deemed the “goofy one”. She and her friends, particularly “The Cousins”, would often get together and harmonize with each other. She even recorded a few songs. She would sometimes display her goofiness when she didn’t know the words to a song by making up her own words to go with the melody.

Arlene’s life was somewhat a battle. Deemed “The Warrior Princess” by her father, Arlene fought the effects of sickle cell anemia from birth. Despite her health challenges, where often she would undergo surgery at the hospital alone, she never let her struggles define her. Despite her daily admittance to the hospital, she strived to live as normal as possible. Her infectious smile could be felt even when she was in her worst pain, and her enormous heart could be seen in how she treated her family and friends. Even during her worst experiences, she always embedded hope. Her will and persistence to live touched everyone who encountered her. Arlene endured her last day of suffering in this life on Friday March 29, 2024. A holy and symbolic day of this year as it also represented the last day of Jesus suffering on earth, universally known as Good Friday. Our faith leads us to believe that just as Jesus rose in his new body, Arlene has now also entered into the realm of Glory in her new body, absent of any and all pain. Arlene was preceded in heavenly transition by her sister, Crystal Carter and her mother Michelle Carter. Left to cherish her memory are her father: Martin Carter Sr., sister: Charlene Carter (Kristin), brother: Martin Carter Jr., Uncle, Lewis Carter (Juanieta), and a host of other friends and relatives.

William Stafford Murray was born October 12, 1947, to the late William Oscar Murray, Jr. and the late Althea Stavelyn Killingsworth Murray in Washington, D.C. He departed this life on March 17, 2024. His friends and family knew him as Rusty, his nickname given to him at birth. Other associates knew him as Bill.

Rusty graduated from Anacostia High School. He attended Howard University and graduated from the School of Electrical Engineering. Rusty enjoyed all things electronic and computer technology and software related and over the years, he held several jobs in those fields. His first and favorite was as a safety engineer for Metro when the subways were first being planned and built in Washington, D.C.

He also enjoyed providing computer technical support for GE in the Aircraft Engines division in Cincinnati, Ohio. In his spare time, Rusty loved being called upon to help family and friends with computer hardware and software issues.
Rusty loved trains, boats, planes, muscle cars, CB Radio, and pets of all kinds. He built model boats and planes and even CB Radio equipment. And there was always a room with train tracks on the floor with trains ready to roll around the track, much to the delight of his cats. Growing up, he enjoyed vacationing at Columbia Beach and Atlantic City where he gained an appreciation of being on the open water. Later in life, you could often find him enjoying his boat in the marina in D.C. Early in life, Rusty became enthusiastic about high powered cars and loved to be behind the wheel.

However, as passionate as he was about his cars, he also enjoyed riding his bicycles around the city. Rusty will be missed and remembered by those he leaves behind: sons, William Russell Murray and George Russell Murray, a sister, Thelma A. Hogue and brother-in-law, John T. Hogue, Jr. of Cincinnati, a nephew, John T. Hogue, III, of San Francisco, a dear cousin, Charles Hall and his wife Mildred Hall of Washington, D.C. and friends.

Joseph Young

Joseph (Joe) Young was born on March 23, 1956 to Alfred Young Jr. (deceased) and Berlina Young. Joe grew up in south central Los Angeles, the eldest boy of nine children. Joe was a loving father, generous friend, doting son, and beloved neighbor. Throughout his life, he was passionate about the plight of African Americans in the US, using his art and writing as a form of resistance.

As a teenager, “every piece of literary work that I could get my hands on, I read — just anything dealing with the African American experience,” he said. Years later, his fascination with collecting items that chronicle the black struggle for civil rights came about. “I think it had something to do with my awareness as a kid of the stark difference in the quality of life between blacks and whites,” he said.

Lonnie Bunch, the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and former Director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, said “The importance of the Joe Young collection is that he kind of pioneered in contemporary collecting of issues like the civil rights movement. For me as an historian of the black experience, you come to a place like the Smithsonian and you expect them to have more than they do. He’s important in the sense that we need all the repositories we can that illuminate . . . one of the pivotal moments of
American history.”

While working as a reporter with the Washington Informer, he would often be asked to take pictures to accompany his stories. Denise Rolark Barnes, the publisher of The Washington. Informer, said Joe was “thoughtful” in his reporting, which eventually gave way to a full-blown passion for photography. “It seemed as though once he focused on the lives of the people that he was writing about, he realized he could tell a story through photos and I think became really passionate about documenting folks’ stories through photos,” Barnes said on February 6, 2020, approximately 160 of his photos were accepted into the collections of the Smithsonian Institution’s Anacostia Community Museum. They show the transformation of D.C.. neighborhoods and symbolize gentrification occurring across the globe. “His photographs.

A CELEBRATION OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS LIFE

Today, we gather to celebrate a remarkable woman, Clara Maude Richards.

While our hearts ache with her absence, we celebrate the vibrant life she lived for 102 years. Clara wasn’t one to sit still. Whether she was dressing in her signature red outfits with sparkling accessories or planning her next adventure, big or small, she lived with an infectious zest for life.

Clara Maude Richards, the matriarch of eight children, was born in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and lived as a resident in the Petworth neighborhood of Washington DC, with her eldest daughter and primary caregiver, Jennifer Arrindell Selman. Affectionately known as “Mamie” in the Caribbean-American community, she was born on March 29, 1921, the second of four children to Maria Arrundell of Venezuela and Ernest Jeffery of Guyana, South America. Growing up in St. James, Clara and older sister Doris were talked about as “Maria’s beautiful girls.”

Doris was thought of as the quiet beauty while Clara shone with a bold spirit and a flair for fashion that would stay with her throughout her life. She loved to wear bright colored nails and clothing with matching jewelry and accessories. She loved to express her creativity in a wardrobe that made her feel glamorous. Clara was also an avid Trinidad Carnival Masquerader and played “Mas” up to the age of 80.

Clara’s spirit of adventure was legendary. No grocery trip was ordinary for her. It was an opportunity to chat with strangers, share a joke, or even break into impromptu dance moves and of course, dress up! At Crown Bakery, the many customers cherished Mamie as a member of their own family and would embrace her with hugs as she greeted them. She would hop on a plane to visit her grandchildren, no matter how far, because family was everything to her. Her humor was as bright as her smile. She had a knack for making everyone around her laugh, even when she was playfully trying to get her way with her daughter Jennifer about what she wanted for dinner. She was witty and charming. Her spirit exudes love and happiness. Behind her playful façade was a deep well of love and wisdom. She was a pillar of strength for her family, guiding them with gentle hands and fierce loyalty.

Clara Maude Richards, a woman who lived life on her own terms, leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love and adventure. She was predeceased by her husband Herman Richards and her daughter Donna Carter. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Arthur, Paul and Wayne and daughters Jennifer, Grace, Marcelin and Lystra. She also will be sorely missed by her
sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, many grandchildren and great grandchildren in the DMV, New York, Florida, Trinidad and Tobago, Germany, as well as other relatives and friends.

Mamie took her angel wings on Sunday, February 4, 2024, after a brief illness.

We will miss her dearly, but her spirit will continue to shine brightly in our hearts. May we all carry a piece of her zest for life with us, always ready for the next adventure, big or small.
Rest In Peace, dear Clara, until we meet again.

Devin Michael-Richard Stuckey was born on May 18, 1982, in Washington D.C., to Carolyn Gray Stuckey and the late Ronald E. Stuckey. He is and will always be the little brother of Madessa P. Stuckey(Big Sis). Devin in hist toddler years moved from Washington, D.C. to Prince George’s County, Maryland with his family.

In his infancy, Devin was christened at Brightwood Park United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. His Christian tutelage was furthered at Gethsemane United Methodist Church through his high school years. In childhood, Devin was a track runner, a Boy Scout, a practitioner of Taekwondo, and an avid church volunteer. All who met him admired and adored his sweet smile and gentle spirit.

He attended Prince George’s County Schools and was a graduate of Suitland High School, graduating in the Class of 2000. He was a student in the constuction strand that assisted in building Charles Hubert Flowers High School in Springdale, Maryland. Devin then set his sights on his dream job of becoming a barber (like his grandfather). Devin attended Bladensburg Barber School and began working at Paul’s Barber Shop, then Largo One Barber Shop, and then Andrews One Barber Shop serving his community with his patient and precise barbering skills.

Devin received awards for his volunteerism as barber for the senior citizens at Helping Hand Adult Day Services in Capitol Heights, Md. He was a member of the Brigadier General Charles G. McGhee POST 341, in Washington D.C., and assisted his mother in delivering food to senior citizens during COVID for Brightwood Park United Methodist Church.

Carris White, son of the late Willie White, Sr. and Ellen White-Riles, was born in Farmville, NC, on June 10, 1935. He was one of twelve kids. Carris was called home to the lord on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the age of 88 at Washington Hospital Center.

Carris attended the Pitt County Public School System. However, because of the need to help support his siblings, he discontinued his education after completing fourth grade to work on nearby farms.

At an early age, he relocated to Washington, DC and married Carolyn Richardson. Together, they worked for the Washington Post, delivering newspapers and repairing apartments for Colomiras Real Estate Company. Carris never let his education level hold him down. In 1987, Carris received special commendations from the Washington Post for his outstanding performance during the various blizzards that year. He was extremely proud of that award, which remained displayed around his house until his passing. In 2013, at the age of 78, he retired from Cathedral West Condoniums, where he worked for over 15 years.

Affectionately known as “Buddy,” Carris positively impacted everyone he met. If he loved you, you knew it as he would give the shirt off his back for you. He instantly made you love him. Buddy loved life and enjoyed every minute of it. He was a wisecracker and loved to laugh and joke with everyone. Buddy mostly enjoyed watching westerns, listening to music, cooking, and playing the lottery. He will be remembered by all who had the great opportunity to meet him.

Buddy leaves behind to cherish his memories three daughters: Tamiko White (Husband: Norfleet Mabry), Teresa Richardson, and Lolita Butler; one son: Carris Fields (Wife: Ellen Washington); ten grandchildren: Tatiana and Jayquan White, Shayna, Sayvon, and Sahier Richardson, Cra’viona, Thomika, and Clarence Butler, Carris and Keturah Fields; one sister: Frances Edwards (Husband: Jimmie Edwards); three brothers: Milton (Wife: Frances), William (Lois), and Allen (Mable) Riles; and a loving ex-wife: Carolyn Richardson King; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
